{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

Perhaps this'll be a good way to force myself back into blogging about every goddamn thing in my life ever. Even if it doesn't, it should be fun while it lasts.

My subject is 100 Things I Really Really Like (Plus Stories). These things could be songs, books, memories, philosophies, quotes, food, animals, and pretty much anything else I feel like throwing into the mix. (I'm keeping my topic deliberately vague so I can write about whatever. It's like being a freshman all over again.) I get pretty enthusiastic about crap I like, so expect! lots! of! exclamation! points!

THE RULES
1. I have picked 10 celebs that I find attractive;
2. Every day(ish), I will make a poll and you'll have to vote for the celeb you find the least attractive;
3. After 24 hours, the poll will be closed and the man/woman with the most votes will be disqualified. There will then be a new poll with the remaining contestants;
4. After ten days, there will be one winner! :D

Christina Hendricks wins at hot! Like anyone is suprised. In lieu of a picture, here is a clip from Firefly.

I will always think of her as YoSaffBridge, Mad Men notwithstanding.

Little Brother, while watching a National Geographic special: ... and you shouldn't have piercings when you're in Australia anyway, because the spiders will land on them.
Ish: Yes! And the spiders will be all "I'LL RIP YOUR PIERCINGS OFF." And then their homies will hold them back so they don't look soft.

Despite her strangled-mountain-ox levels of hot, Olivia Wilde is now out of the running.

Things I did today: listened to a coworker ramble on about aliens and conspiracy theories, ate Boston cream pie, watched Matilda, wondered what the hell Mara Wilson is up to now, played Scrabble (AND LOST. TWICE. MY SAINTED AUNT I HAVE BRUISED MY PRIDE), sang "El Scorcho" at maximum volume, scoured YouTube for videos of pugs.

Chris Pureka held on a lot longer than I expected.

Dear dude who wants to make a movie of The Fall of the House of Usher starring William Beckett:

Marry and/or babysit me.

With all due respect,

Plans, in no particular order: Work. Write. Drink. Move out. Learn to play my fucking, fucking bass. Finish my BA. Tell dumb jokes. Figure out what to do about grad school, living situations, life in general. Get my name legally changed.* Make cornbread (I have been meaning to do this for ages). Possibly try to become a vegetarian again. Go to concerts. Finish Oliver Twist. Get more tattoos. Buy a houseplant. Watch Dr. Who.

Hopes, in no particular order: That my last year of university will be fun and okay and not a fiasco and, um, actually my last year (if I have to take a sixth year I may choke myself). That I will not fuck myself over academically again. That I will somehow be able to decide where I want to go after graduation.** That I will be able to travel at some point, preferably to places I haven't been before. That I won't start feeling silly about having blue hair and alternative facial piercings. That I'll work up the nerve to tell future coworkers and bosses that I don't want to go by my given name. That I will do great things without compromising, a la Echobelly.

Dreams, in no particular order: Last night I dreamed an entire novel, but some horrible noise startled me awake around three o'clock and I promptly forgot absolutely everything about it except for an old man sitting in a broken armchair covered in dust, smoking a cheap cigar and laughing.

* Elliott Gerald Gish.*** Which will make me a Gee, an El, an Ish, and an EGG.

** My choices at the moment are: stay in St. John's for a(n extra) year (pros: more time with friends and Older Sister; cons: more time in Newfoundland), go to Halifax for a year (pros: get to live in city of my heart; cons: would likely have to live there with parents), hop a plane overseas to England and live with one of my aunts for a year (pros: starting over somewhere where no one knows me; cons: starting over somewhere where no one knows me).

*** I am not going to keep my surname because I don't like my father's side of the family. I could take my mother's maiden name, but "Elliott Gerald Mawdsley" sounds kind of dorky. I wish I could say that I have some deep, symbolic reason for picking it, but honestly, I just like the way it sounds. It is a German name, which is relevant for me because the only non-Irish bits of me come from a German ancestor on my mother's side. It is also a Smashing Pumpkins album, the last name of one of the leads from SLC Punk!, and a type of D&D character, but that is entirely coincidental.

You know, I don't remember much of this past month or so. I know I've been working. I know I've been going places and doing things. I know I dyed my hair blue again. I know my sister moved to Newfoundland with her boyfriend. I know I read some books and some of them were good. I rode the bus a lot. I learned how to make honey cake. I saw Sex and the City 2 (without having seen the show or the first movie) and was duly horrified. I got a new tattoo. I started thinking about grad school. I wrote stuff. I reread the perks of being a wallflower. I reread Boy Meets Boy. I ate cake made with expired eggs. I played Sociables. I played Scrabble. I played at being a grownup and then ruined it all by sticking safety pins in my ears in a fit of nostalgia.

That's all, really.

Oh! And I introduced Little Brother to the Tim Gunn version of "Closer."

He appreciated it.

My hobbies are mostly incredibly dull and involve sitting in little rooms reading books and writing things about dragons. I also like to make lists of my favourite words! Here are some of them. )

I am a creature of many talents- I can bake pumpkin spice cookies and peanut butter cake, recite "Jabberwocky" from memory, impersonate Tim Gunn (badly), lie, sustain debilitating injuries at whatever job I happen to have, put up with people even if I don't like them that much, provide running commentaries on Tarantino movies, clean up after people who are sick and vomity, dance like Michael Stipe in "Losing My Religion," make toast, get barrier at concerts, remember all the lyrics to "Konstantine" even when I'm drunk, build card houses, play "Saturday Night" by the Misfits on bass, overanalyze novels and occasionally short fiction, win at Scrabble, and assemble fantastic playlists for any and all occasions. Also sometimes I write things that are mostly not true.

Gosh. I am just gonna be a winner in the job market, I can tell.

Mostly Products Created By Nature, by [livejournal.com profile] skoosiepants. High school AUs of any kind are like delicious crack to me, and this one is Greta/Bob, one of my not-very-secret-at-all het OTPs.

Spencer asks her, “Is that a gym uniform?”

“She’s got egg in her hair, too,” Vicky says, absently paging through a TV Guide. “My car smells like dead babies.”

“Classy.”

Vicky flashes Ashlee a grin. “That’s me.”

“Raw eggs’ll make your coat nice and shiny,” Jon says earnestly, and Brendon laughs into his shoulder, and Greta isn’t sure, but she thinks he mumbles something like, “But she totally has to eat them,” because all her friends
suck.

“Seriously, I love you guys,” Greta says. Best day of her
life, that’s what this is.

When I was in eighth grade I went through an embarrassing Wiccan phase. This was at least partially because I'd seen The Craft and thought that Fairuza Balk was really cool. It was also because I wanted to piss off my dad. I spent a lot of time haunting Halifax's single New Age store (where everything smells like patchouli and a single crystal costs twenty million dollars), reading Tarot cards (badly), and attempting to cast spells in my bedroom using a stick and some garlic powder.* For about a year I basically embodied every teenage Wiccan cliche in the book (Wicca is the world's OLDEST RELIGION! Christians are all oppressing me by being Christian! My devotion to the Goddess is best expressed by reading epic fantasy novels and drawing pentagrams at the top of all of my homework assignments! Etc, etc) and whined and pretended to hex people and was basically a blight on the face of the earth.**

Then, the summer after eighth grade, I read this book.

Photobucket

Whether or not The Great Cosmic Mother can actually be classed as nonfiction is maybe a little iffy- you have to take a helluva lot of leaps of faith when you read it- but at the time at which I discovered it it was the most crazy mind-bending thing I'd ever read that wasn't a novel. At that point I was just starting to identify, pretty tentatively, as a feminist; this book tipped me over the edge and into full-on radical territory. It also helped me develop a much deeper, richer understanding of the Divine than the one I'd had before, not just because it was so adamant about God being a woman*** but because it addressed the ways in which "woman" as a thing didn't have to be limited to what I'd been taught to see as "feminine." (Ex: this book was the first I'd ever read that said anything about the Sacred Androgyne or the third gender, which, since I was also starting to question my own gender and gender as a social construct, was a Big Fucking Deal.) The type of "woman-centric" religions I'd been exposed to up to that point were all about duality- the God is the sky, the Goddess is the earth, the God is active, the Goddess is passive, the God is masculine, the Goddess is feminine, blah blah blah sacred polarities balancing energies blabitty blabitty blah****- and this book helped me get beyond that without having to give up on the whole thing altogether. And it was just fucking cool.

My Wiccan phase pretty much ended that year, a little while after reading this book, and I've forgotten most of the other things that ~blew my mind at that time. But this one is still important to me.

* I figured if you can substitute powdered herbs for fresh ones in cooking you can do it during rituals as well. Turns out it doesn't actually work like that!

** Not all Wiccans are like this, obviously. Not even all teenage Wiccans are like this. But I was a dumbass teenage Wiccan.

*** Which, for whatever reason(s), is still an important part of my own piecemeal wishy-washy spirituality today. Probably it has to do with my relationship with my mother, or something.

**** Please note: if the idea of two very separate, distinctly gendered deities is a big part of your personal faith, that is fine. But man, it is so very, very Not My Thing. Also, my understanding of Wicca was a religion at that point was formed mostly by the websites I found on the subject (all terrible!) and the few books I could hunt down in the public library (even worse!), plus the Sweep series by Cate Tiernan (oh my God what WAS that bullshit!). So there was probably a lot about it that just did not properly register with me. Hear you me, kids: if you want to convert to a new religion, READ THE RIGHT BOOKS.

The last fictional book I read was The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz. It is about a fat virgin named Dawn Schweizer Oscar who loves Lord of the Rings and is sad and Dominican. It is also full of bits of Spanish, which I painstakingly puzzled out with the aid of a French-English dictionary. It was pretty fantastic and ended exactly where it needed to end. That's rare in a book, I find.

The fictional books I am currently reading are Lady Oracle by Margaret Atwood, On Beauty by Zadie Smith, and By the Light of My Father's Smile by Alice Walker. (Yes, all at once. I read a lot. It's a thing.)
