Okay. So I went to the theatre with Sute and Lauren (who's such a cool kid I don't know why she's friends with my sister), to see The Young Black Stallion. (I was just acting as their bodyguard, so stop sniggering.) I wasn't exactly looking forward to it, but I figured it would be relatively painless, as movies go.
I was wrong. Oh, God, I was wrong.
This is the most inane piece of shit I've seen since How To Deal. (And, mind, this comes from the girl who tried to watch Open Range last night.) The story, such as it was, was about a girl who befriends a wild horse and rides him in a race to win a bunch of other horses so her family can start to breed horses again. What was wrong with it? Let me sum up in point form:

- There's absolutely no dramatic tension. You know the damn kid's gonna win the race from the minute it's mentioned. The camerawork doesn't help at all- at moments that should be emotional and tantamount to the story the scene fades out into yet another pretty shot of the desert. Which is probably deep or something.
- The black stallion is supposedly a wild horse whose mother was stolen by humans. However, this girl meets him it takes about two minutes for her to start kissing his nose and calling him a "good boy." Wild my ass.
- ... that being said, she kisses that horse waaaaaaaay too much. It's creepy.
- The characters aren't characters. They're cardboard cutouts. In Disney movies there's normally some random interesting character that makes it easier to live through; there are no such characters here. Also no decent actors. Even the fucking extras can't act. They just stare around vacantly like they're waiting for a buzzard to shit on them.
- The main character doesn't have to try to win. No time is spent on her becoming friends with the horse, on training it or teaching it how to bear a rider. Everything's magically handed to her on a silver platter.
- She lives in the Arabian fuckin' Desert. I somehow think people might be a little more upset about a girl in a horserace. They didn't need to make a big thing about it, just address it a little. But noooooo, no one says a damn thing.
- The characters sing, only they can't sing.
- Every few fucking minutes there's another fucking sunset. It's like the director was saying, "Crap, we need to stretch this out... just stick another sunset in there, they won't know the difference."
- Perhaps I'm not well-versed enough in that particular culture (what culture is it? I don't know, they never bother to say), but who the hell uses a harness covered in pompoms to train a wild horse?
- The villain- if you can call him a villain- is Evil without any good reason. And has the personality of a rock. A really small one covered in dust that you'd find on a playground, maybe underneath a crushed Twinkie or something.
- PLOT! Where's the PLOT?! MOVIES NEED PLOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- "Dramatic" music. Cheesy, wimpy dramatic music that's supposed to be majestic but is just tuneless and annoying. Then again, it did let me know when a moment was supposed to be poignant or dramatic much better than any of the actors did.
- This is meant to be a movie about friendship. Friendship, as I understand it, is meant to be mutually beneficial. However, the stallion doesn't benefit from this friendship at all, whereas the girl uses him to start a goddamn business and gain social status. (Plus, she uses him as her entry fee for the race. Yeah, that's friendship, all right.)
- I don't know about you, but when I was ten I liked seeing movies in theatres, no matter how stupid or predictable the movie itself was. The most positive thing the two ten-years-olds that saw this with me had to say about it was, "Wow, those screens were really big."

Horrible, horrible movie, never ever see it. Rating: -*****

As Things have turned out- they have a tendency to do that- I did not go to dinnermoviething yesterday. Regret it some, as it sounded fun, but I was very busy doing...

I pray that this is a joke.
