I have this friend-
Well. Not really a friend, per se. Not as such. She's not really a friend so much as she's the daughter of one of my mum's friends, one of the girls who came over from England with her. She's one of those people who I know fairly well, but not by choice. And she's... well, she's sort of a dumbass. I don't dislike her-we have similar taste in music and like to listen to Oasis when we drink together. (Which happens fairly often, since our mothers are both of the opinion that bonding time between old friends should always involve copious amounts of alcohol and are more that willing to let their offspring in on the fun. I think it must be a British thing.) But she's not the brightest cookie in the box. She's one of those people who thinks she's hard done by when her mum doesn't let her go boozing with a carful of frat boys or lend her sixty bucks for a new pair of Sketchers. (Or whatever other overpriced ugly shoes people are salivating over these days.... I remembered the Sketchers thing from Ten Things I Hate About You and since that's the only brand name I really remember shoe-wise I figured I'd go with it. What the fuck do Sketchers look like anyway? I should find out. Could be important somehow.)
So the other night this girl's mother came over for dinner, leaving her cellphone in the car. She's a pretty cool woman, so fun was had, tea was drunk, and people kept on hitting me on the head for being honest. Which happens a lot. Come nine-thirty she decided it was time to head back home, so she went out to her car, stopping for a minute to check her cell messages.
There was one from the QE2. Her daughter had been rushed to hospital with alcohol poisoning.
We got the story in a bit of a rush as Mum rushed out of the door: the girl had gone to the Pavilion, a club downtown, with one of her friends. They'd met up with a couple of guys from school there, who'd brought vodka. They were drinking it straight. The limit for blood alcohol levels here in order to be able to drive is 0.8. Hers was seven point something. The girl was absolutely shitfaced and vomited all over herself before she blacked out outside the Pavilion. Once they got her to the hospital and started to sober her up all she could do was whimper about how her mother didn't love her and her sister got all the attention and werp werp werp.
(Note to all people who drink: Being intoxicated is NO EXCUSE for being a fucking asshole. I've drank, and I've been able to remain civil. This is me, mind. Being civil doesn't come naturally. But even when I'm smashed, I somehow manage to avoid blaming the problems of the world on people who have the misfortune to be genetically linked to me. You should too. No, you're not special. No, you're not tragically misunderstood. No, you do not have a loophole. If drinking turns you into a swaggering, shitfaced prick, then don't drink, you moron.)
The police, of course, got involved with this. They know that the girl and her friends are underaged. And the end result of this fiasco?
They might end up closing the Pavilion.
This club is the only all-ages venue in Halifax. It's the only place where kids can really go on the rare occasion that decent bands stop by Halifax. More importantly, it's the only place that the kids I know who are involved in music can play. If the Pavilion closes, all the SJA bands- Nancy, Audity, Filmore North- will have nowhere to play. Maybe in places where there isn't much of a music scene that wouldn't make a difference, but around here there are more bands and side projects than you can shake a stick at. And they're not all just Weezer cover bands either (although about half of them started out that way). A lot of them are actually good.
And now that whole scene might be ruined. Everybody might have to go back to screwing around in a basement, getting bored, and giving up, because they won't have anything bigger to look forward to. Just because a very stupid person decided that her life sucked and she thus needed to spew all over herself and pass out on the sidewalk.
Alcohol is the devil's milk, kids.
(Yes, I'm done now. I just needed to get that off of my chest. Music is something that I feel very strongly about, possibly due to the fact that I can't play it and in fact have less talent than ought to be possible for a single human being. It's an overcompensation thing, I guess. And yeah, I know I haven't updated for a week. I've been busy. More on that later.)
(There are a lot of rambling brackets in this entry, notice that?)
