Spent the last night of 2009 in a happy haze of beer, pot, and gingerbread with some delightful people. And got a call from a very certain girl at the stroke of midnight.

2010, you are off to a good start.

1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?

1) Worked in a bakery.
2) Worked as a house-cleaner.
3) Dated someone younger than me.
4) Went to a gaaaaaaaaaaaaaay bar.
5) Had one'a them there ca-joo-wul sexy relationships.
6) Took on a position of responsibility in a student group.
7) Voluntarily presented as femme.
8) Performed arty-ass social experiments on myself.
9) Took a Women's Studies course.
10) Submitted a piece of my writing to an art show.
11) Dyed my hair purple.
12) Attended an Arty Film Screening, with Real Live Arty People.
13) Went trick-or-treating. (I've done this before, really, but this was my first time as an adult.)
14) Rode in a limousine.
15) Decided what I want to do with my degree. <-- this is still weirding me out

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

My resolutions from last year:

1) Write. Write as much as possible.
2) Don't forget who you are, and that you don't ever have to be anyone else.
3) Seriously, learn to play the goddamn bass.

... um. I think I did pretty okay at #2? /o\

My resolutions this year:

1) Get in shape. You have a gym membership- use it, motherfucker.
2) Be more assertive and stop caring so much about whether people like you or not.
3) Fork over the dough for bass lessons and learn, for God's sake.
4) PAY MORE ATTENTION IN CLASS. In fact, your education in general is a little lacking. Learn as much as possible. Take a Spanish course. Read up about politics. You have a brain for a reason.
5) Move out by May.
6) Start handling your money better instead of wasting it all on frivolous shit.
7) WRITE. >:(((

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

One of my cousins. The baby is named Lacey Lou, to my eternal dismay.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

That depends on your definition of "close," I suppose. Need you like water in my lungs.

5. What countries did you visit?

0, 0, 0! Sometime next year I swear I am going to go to America, even if I have to live on ramen for months.

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?

An apartment, money, a double bed, time to waste in parks and under trees, the ability to concentrate, a trip somewhere I haven't been before, and- as always- a book deal.

7. What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

- February 12th (I'm not sorry there's nothing to save).
- March 28th (happy one year to me).
- April 27th (went to Halifax).
- June 26th (Joel Plaskett show!).
- July 10th (tempus frangit).
- July 11th (went to a bar and thereby changed the course of my entire year)
- September 25th (first date with Kat).
- November 20th (wine and cheese, my first time wearing heels).
- December 18th (it was just a really nice day).

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

I talked to people! I made friends! I did things without freaking out (too much) about them! I am still excited about this, because I haven't been able to just sit in a room and talk to people since I was a very wee thing. And now I can, and it is great and not terrifying (usually).

Also, I wrote papers on two subjects I've always wanted to write about: the use of vampire folklore in "Snow, Glass, Apples," and the feminist merit of 10 Things I Hate About You.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Ahaha, let's not talk about NaNo. Ever.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Several bouts of THE PLAGUE, but nothing really serious. I didn't even get the swine flu!

11. What was the best thing you bought?

My lovely wee wrist tattoo. It is usually my favourite thing about myself physically. The lava lamp I bought is pretty rockin' as well.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

MINE. \o/

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

Stephen Harper's. Always.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Cab fare, because I am a slutbag.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Summer, music, going to Halifax, BANDIT LEE WAY, the Centre, learning how to bake shit, future plans, fronds and fambly.

16. What song will always remind you of 2009?

"The Fear" by Lily Allen, "Cheap and Cheerful" by the Kills, "My Girls" by Animal Collective, "Leeds United" and "Oasis" by Amanda Palmer, "Our Daughters Will Never Be Free" by the Indelicates, "Sugarbaby" by Morningwood, MCR's cover of "Desolation Row," "Homecoming" by Hey Monday, "Sharpshooter! Sharpshooter!" by Team Goldie, "Aside" and "Civil Twilight" by the Weakerthans, "Hysteric" and "Zero" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "(Coffee's For Closers)" and "Of All The Gin Joints In The World" by Fall Out Boy, "Casanova, Baby!" by the Gaslight Anthem, "Spaceman" by the Killers, "Just Impolite" by Plushgun, "My Feet" by Rebekah Higgs, "Lips" by Micachu and the Shapes, "Lessons Learned" and "Daylight" by Matt and Kim, "This Is Our Perfect Crime" by the Von Bondies, "Heavy Cross" by the Gossip, "The Rake's Song" by the Decemberists, "When My Boy Walks Down The Street" by the Magnetic Fields, "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black-Eyed Peas (shut up), "Fagette" by Athens Boys Choir, "A-Punk" by Vampire Weekend, "The One" by Kylie Minogue, "Through and Through and Through" by Joel Plaskett, "Love You Much Better" by the Hush Sound, "All To Myself" by Marianas Trench, "Alcohol" by Millionaires (that one is Amy's fault), "Hell" by Tegan and Sara, "His Girl Friday" by the Academy Is..., "I'm Ready" by Allison Weiss, "The Fixer" by Pearl Jam, "New In Town" by Little Boots, "Young Cardinals" by Alexisonfire, "Sink Into Me" by Taking Back Sunday, "Head Spins" and "Jump In" by High Places, "Hard Times" by Patrick Wolf, "Fever" by Adam Lambert, "Wild Gardens" by Magneta Lane, "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, "First Person" and "Transmitter Failure" by Jenny owen Youngs, "Bulletproof" by La Roux, "Ready For The Floor" by Lissy Trullie, "Blood On My Hands" by the Used, "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel, "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga, "Gimme Sympathy" by Metric, "Satellite Skin" by Modest Mouse, "Time To Pretend" and "Kids" by MGMT, "This Tornado Loves You" by Neko Case, "You! Me! Dancing!" by Los Campesinos!, "Eet" and "Folding Chair" by Regina Spektor, "I Want You To" by Weezer, aaaaaand everything from Glee.

So every song ever written, apparently.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

a) happier or sadder?

Holy shit, so much happier. Even though the last month or so has done nothing but kick me in the balls, I look at my life now compared to my life a year ago (or, God forbid, two years ago), and there's just no comparison. I like myself, I like where I'm going, and I like what I'm doing to get there. I'm so positive about everything right now I'm turning into goddamn Jack Canfield.

b) thinner or fatter?

Thinner. A lot thinner. I can fit into size six jeans, which weirds me out since I still think of myself as a fat kid.

c) richer or poorer?

Poorer, but at least now I am poor because I'm paying for school myself and not because I spent all my money buying someone else's groceries. (Fuck you, 2007!)

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

I always say "writing," sigh. Also, a little more bass practice would not have gone amiss.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Being INSANE IN THE MEMBRANE. Seriously, my crazy can just gtfo whenever it wants, because it tends to keep me from doing things and makes me cry and freak out at awkward moments.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

I spent it sleeping, watching Chuck, and feeling crappy. Woo!

21. Did you fall in love in 2009?

I'm not entirely sure yet, but. Um. Signs are pointing to yes.

... :)

22. How many one-night stands?

I don't kiss and tell. (Except for when I do, but you know. I won't now.)

23. What were your favourite TV programs?

I'd say Glee, but it is way too problematic to be my favourite anything. Um... Castle is pretty great, Dollhouse was interesting, and that one season of Project Runway I watched on YouTube was fun. Oh, and Skins! Skins was fab, except for Cook who is a boring tool.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Happily, I do not.

25. What was the best book you read?

Oh, man, I read a lot this year. What I remember:

On Writing by Stephen King, The Great Good Thing by Roderick Townley, Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman On Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity by Julie Serano, Persepolis and Persepolis 2 by Marjane Satrapi, How To Suppress Women's Writing by Joanna Russ, Peeps, Last Days, and the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld, Spin by Robert Charles Wilson, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, Men At Arms by Terry Pratchett, The Great Perhaps by Joe Meno, Out by Natsuo Kirino, The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo, Momo by Michael Ende, Bad Monkeys and Set This House In Order by Matt Ruff, The Case of Mary Bell by Gitta Sereny, Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord and The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman by Louis de Bernieres, The Complete Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood, White Teeth by Zadie Smith, The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, Now Is The Time To Open Your Heart by Alice Walker, The Passion of Artemisia by Susan Vreeland, The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, Shadowbridge by Gregory Frost, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby, Hey Nostradamus! by Douglas Coupland, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, The Dispossessed by Ursula K. LeGuin, House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, Party Monster by James St. James, and Mindscan by Robert J. Sawyer.

*breathes*

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Matt and Kim, the Indelicates, Spinnerette, Lily Allen, Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga... wow, how obvious is it that I've been hanging out with gay dudes?

27. What did you want and get?

[censored, for all our sakes]

28. What did you want and not get?

[censored, for all our sakes]

29. What was your favourite film of this year?

A toss-up between Milk and Jennifer's Body. I feel that these two choices say a lot about me as a person: namely, that I am a big gaymo who doesn't go to the movies enough.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

On my birthday I turned twenty-one. I dressed up like Alice in Wonderland, went to school, hung out with groovy people, read a lot, ate a hot dog, went to the bookstore, and got the bus home. I sat there on the seat by the window listening to Bratmobile and reading the latest issue of Bitch and suddenly realized that at some point in the last few years I'd turned into the kind of person I always wanted to be.

Then the drunk woman sitting a few seats behind me threw up on herself.

But it was still a pretty special moment.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

More tattoos, more piercings, more writing, and fewer inexplicable panic attacks.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?

Has been described as "quirky," "unusual," and "fucking weird." Lots of striped socks, bright patterns, stompy boots, weird little dresses and skirts, and odd necklaces. Also: polka dots. LOTS of polka dots. Also I have this hat that looks like a bee and I wear it as often as I can because it is the most fantastic hat ever made.

33. What kept you sane?

Sunbathing, sweet tea, and a mix I made called "My Crazy Brain."

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Various Suicide Girls, Allison Mosshart (even though her new band sucks), Brody Dalle, Lily Allen, Karen O, Ruby Rose, Jess Origliasso, Zooey Deschanel, Christina Hendricks, Rosario Dawson, Sasha Grey, Greta Salpeter, Chantal Claret, Jessicka Addams, Lyn-Z, Jenny Owen Youngs, Olivia Wilde, Kristen Stewart, Beth Ditto, Rachel Maddow, Amanda Palmer... I think I like the same famous people every year. I am nothing if not consistent. And boring.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?

Stephen Harper's endless douchebaggery.

36. Who did you miss?

Nobody, really. I don't miss many people anymore, because the ones who are gone from my life are mostly gone for very good reasons.

37. Who was the best new person you met?

Way too many to list. Basically everyone at the Centre, plus a few extras- which I think brings me up to about twenty-five people? Yeah, something like that.

I also met my sister's boyfriend and he is pretty okay.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009.

Take the time you need, breathe as slow as you want, sing to yourself when you can't stop worrying. Write poetry on blank surfaces. Make friends. If someone offers to buy you any sort of beverage do not turn them down. Go to bonfires and picnics. Make plans, even if they don't work out. Love everyone. Don't panic. It's not as awful as it seems. It's not as hard as you think. You're better than you know.

And a "ruche" is "a strip of pleated lace, net, muslin, or other material for trimming or finishing a dress, as at the collar or sleeves."

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

Measure me in metered lines
And one decisive stare
The time it takes to get from here to there
My ribs that show through t-shirts
And these shoes I got for free
I'm unconsoled
I'm lonely
I am so much better than I used to be
Terrified of telephones
And shopping malls and knives
Drowning in the pools of other lives
Rely a bit too heavily
On alcohol and irony
Get clobbered on by courtesy
In love with love and lousy poetry
And I'm leaning on this broken fence
Between past and present tense
And I'm losing all those stupid games
That I swore I'd never play
But it almost feels okay
Circumnavigate this body
Of wonder and uncertainty
Armed with every precious failure
And amateur cartography
I'm breathing deep before
I spread those maps out on my bedroom floor
And I'm leaning on this broken fence
Between past and present tense
And I'm losing all those stupid games
That I swore I'd never play
But it feels okay
And I'm leaving with goodbye
And I'm losing but I'll try
With the last ways left
To remember sing
My imperfect offering.

- "Aside," by the Weakerthans.

15) Decided what I want to do with my degree. <-- this is still weirding me out

what did you pick, bb?

One of my cousins. The baby is named Lacey Lou, to my eternal dismay.

D: really? that would be a cute nickname, though.

My lovely wee wrist tattoo. It is usually my favourite thing about myself physically. The lava lamp I bought is pretty rockin' as well.

jklgjsd, are there pictures?

Skins was fab, except for Cook who is a boring tool.

the only thing i like about cook is the homoerotic tension between him and freddie.

Stephen Harper's endless douchebaggery.

I WANT TO VOTE HIM OFF OF THE ISLAND. D:

you should know that i had to start a .txt file and take notes, for i wouldn't forget anything.

I have decided to be a librarian! Partly because librarians have made such a big difference in my life, partly because I love books, but mostly because I've seen The Mummy one too many times and want to be just like Evey.

Yes, really. It is the worst name ever and I feel sorry for the baby in question.

Of the wrist tatt? Yup, here. And here is the lava lamp:

Photobucket

God, it is so friggin' groovy.

Cook is so gay for Freddie it isn't even funny. I'm hoping they explore that a little more in the next season so I don't roll my eyes so hard whenever I see him onscreen.

Off the island and INTO THE SEA, my dear.

my favorite librarian used to lend me her tea kettle, which made my face go :D

does it count as child abuse? / can it? because it should, maybe.

okay, so i fangirl both fairly shamelessly. that is a really sweet font. i could watch lava lamps forever, it is ridiculous.

(and it doesn't hurt that freddie is slightly effeminate in that way i am so stuck on.) and i hope they improve the naomi/emily storyline, because cook and freddie completely out gay them. and they could be so good.

with no lifeboat.

Those are some pretty interesting lyrics. I wish I could write.

I sat there on the seat by the window listening to Bratmobile and reading the latest issue of Bitch and suddenly realized that at some point in the last few years I'd turned into the kind of person I always wanted to be.

That is awesome. I can't wait for that to happen to me.

You are still one of the coolest people EVER. I had my answers to this meme mostly finished and then LJ fucking ate my post and I can't remember ANYTHING anymore. Goddamn.

The Weakerthans are pretty fantabulous. (And they came here in the spring and I could have gone to see them but I wasn't into them then so I didn't bother, WAIL.) They remind me of [livejournal.com profile] uncommon_crow a lot.

It'll happen soon, I bet. :D

ooooer what did you do? HI, my name is mikey, ellie, or mimi if you please. you probably don't remember me. this year i excelled at disappearing a lot. nice to re-make your acquaintance!

I totally remember you, whateva~

And I did this thing where I wrote on myself, and it was silly and emo and awesome! I kind of trailed off once school ended, though. I should start doing that again, it was nice.

OMG YOU DO? this warms the cockles of my wee little heart. <3

aha! i totally remember seeing those posts on my flist. i thought it was pretty groovy; it reminded me of to write love on her arms, only without the cheesiness or the secret homophobia what is not cool at all >:(. anyway, did you get any noteworthy reactions?

Woah, TWLOHA is secretly homophobic??? WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT. No, I didn't- probably because I almost never talked to/made eye contact with anyone back when I did it. If I start it up again this semester there will likely be reactions, though! And then I can be all "well, you see, [artsy blah blah about loving and BELIEVING IN yourself, and also the world is gr8]!" And then my friend Amy will call me a fag, and it will be awesome. \o/
