House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski. I've been meaning to read this ever since I got into Poe. The singer, that is, not the writer. So... about five years? Yeah, that sounds right.

Totally Joe, by James Howe. By the guy who wrote Bunnicula! Except this book has no vampire bunnies, just a gay twelve-year-old boy named Joe who overidentifies with E.T. It's still fun times.

BITCHfest, by various angry ladies. This is another one I've been meaning to get for a while. I haven't been able to find Bitch in Newfoundland so far and even though I'm not as into that magazine as I used to be, I still need a shot of snarky feminist pop culture analysis every now and then.

The Essential Calvin and Hobbes, by Bill Watterson. I blame Kidston for that one. Working at Jesus camp taught me that Christian kids love three things: Coldplay, Calvin and Hobbes, and violent contact sports.

I'd like to think that if I ever met myself buying books I'd think I was a pretty cool person. I feel like I kind of am sometimes. I mean, not cool cool because I spend way too much time on the Internet for that, but I am often pretty pleased by the fact that I am myself. I like myself. It's kind of awesome.

Also awesome: Katie Kay (just in general) and this Against Me!/Tegan Quinn video.

That's my favourite song for the next five minutes.

Today is my nine-month antiversary. I feel like I should celebrate it somehow, but I'm not sure how one celebrates an antiversary- maybe with a pint of ice cream, a Lifetime movie-of-the-week, and a good cry. I don't really feel like crying, though.

As a matter of fact, I feel pretty good right now. Happy to be on my own and waiting for surprises.

I kick you like a dog that's never been fed
Kick you like a dog that's never been fed
I trust you with my words like you're my friend

I've got so much
Stowed away down there
I've got so much
Stowed away down there

You were all for what I had like it's worth something
all for what I had like it's worth something
You lean into me 'cause you know that you can

Keys out, lights on
No one's waiting
Keys out, lights on
No one's waiting

Now I give you my lies all smudged with ink
Give you my lies all smudged with ink
You see right through because I am nothing

No more questions
I surrender
No more questions
I surrender

- "Keys Out, Lights On," by Jenny Owen Youngs

This song reminds me of July and how it felt to fall asleep staring at someone else's ceiling. And confusing kisses. And getting sad and getting afraid of being sad for good. It's bitter and wistful and very, very quiet, and I like it a lot.

BitchFest is pretty rad, though I agree-I haven't read that magazine for eons. I think it coincided with my disillisionment with the UVic Women's Studies department. :P

I think I got disillusioned with them back in 2004, when they interviewed Diane DiMassa. She said some really transphobic stuff in that interview re: MichFest, and not only did her interviewer not really bother to point out that hey, you're saying some fucked up shit, lady, their only official response to the letters of protest they got was "wah wah wahhh, WE didn't say it stop being meen."

That is a legitimate position re: Katie Kay. She is very very crushable, and has a puppy, and says smart things, and is embarrassingly hot!

I haven't read The Misfits yet, but he wrote another (way more serious) kid book i quite liked called The Watcher. It's about abuse and storytelling, iirc. Also, have you read Boy Meets Boy? (I love trashy queer YA lit.)

IF GIRLWOOD IS NOT CLASSY THEN CLASSY IS NOT A GOOD THING TO BE. :(

Me too.

TRUFAX. (GIRLWOOD IS ALSO THE BEST WORD EVER. :D)

most especially because the first time i read it was in grade ten, and i was realizing that the actual world is not like that.

There are! Or there's one, anyway. Mostly it analyzes pop culture and trends and TV shows and commercials and stuff like that and mocks the shit out of them when they suck. Also, they introduced me to two pretty amazing bands: the Gossip and the Kills.

Calvin and Hobbes is HEARTWARMING, K. AND INVOLVES AN IMAGINARY TIGER.

IMAGINARY TIGERS ARE THE BEST KIND BECAUSE THEY DO NOT EAT YOU AND ALSO ARE V. V. FLUFFY.

Out is pretty cool. So is Curve sometimes, although a lot of queer magazines tend to cater to very white, very conservative upper-class gay folks, which bothers me- there used to be a mag for black queers called Venus but then the editor went kind of nutso and converted to Christianity and decided she was an ex-lesbian and now that's mostly what that magazine is about. :( There used to be a magazine called ROCKRGRL that was all about female musicians and queer bands and stuff, but I think that's defunct now.

It kind of makes my day that the guy who wrote Bunnicula writes books about gay kids and E.T. It really does.

That said, EVERYBODY loves Calvin and Hobbes!
