Introducing Laura Jane Grace. I am so excited for her I may pee a little.

I was gonna text you and talk about this but then it was 11 o'clock and I didn't. I don't follow Against Me! beyond that one album I bought forever ago and the occasional single I hear on the radio, but I know enough to be able to say that this transition is gonna change the band's sound in a way that I'm really excited about. Add to that the band and her wife are totally on board and she's gonna feel like herself for what is probably the first time in ever, and I say it's thumbs-up all around!

I'm interested to hear what her voice sounds like when she transitions physically! I'm imagining a sort of Patti Smith sound, but not as annoying as Patti Smith.

I was so excited to find out about this. I saw the photo on Tumblr first and was like, "Oh, she's lovely, who is she?" And then was like "!!!" And then was super pumped about it.

The reaction on the part of other people has been frustrating to see. I have a coworker who's, all in all, a pretty cool dude. He's also a big Against Me! fan, has a tattoo and everything. He was on his phone at work and found the story and he came over to show it to me, and said, "Dude. What the fuck?!" I gave my thoughts on it and told him how exciting I thought it was, but he said that he felt like he was losing Tom Gabel or something like that. That made me go :( and worry about what the general fan reaction is going to be.

Man, that is a really douchey response. I get worrying about their sound changing or the band breaking up or something, but feeling like you've lost someone because they've come out has never, ever made sense to me.

I've seen a lot of positive fan reaction so far, though. I think a lot of AM fans are more intelligent than the average bear.

Oh, I saw some magnificent reactions on r/punk: the few posters who were jackasses were met with a barrage of comments that boiled down to "if punk is all about being yourself no matter what society says and you have a problem with her transitioning, you're a fucking hypocrite poser who probably thinks Blink-182 circa 2003 is the acme of punk."

...I am honestly not sure if that sort of response would happen in any other scene, but it was fucking heart-warming.
